Fremantle is the principle port of Western Australia at the mouth of the Swan River 20km from the capital, Perth. Fremantle was proclaimed a city on 3 June 1929 - 100 years, one month and one day since it was founded by Captain Charles Fremantle. The city is a cultural melting pot with almost forty per cent of the residents born overseas. The city has a mix of industry and tourism with a number of museums and art galleries. The Fremantle Festival which began in 1902 is the premier annual event and runs for ten days in November.
